Thursday, September 21, 2006 (Chhatarpur):

A 95-year-old woman in Baniyani in Chattarpur district of Madhya Pradesh is reported to have committed sati after her husband Siyaram died.

Karua Devi sat on her husband's funeral's pyre and was not prevented from doing this by villagers.

However, Kuria Devi's sons - Baldu Singh, Kripal Singh, Kubeer Singh and Drigpal Singh - were arrested for murder and under the Prevention of Sati Act.

Sub-divisional magistrate (laundi) ON Pandey has been asked to probe the incident.

Cases were also being registered against those instigating the woman to commit the act, Inspector General of Police (Saga range) Swarn Singh said.

As senior police and administrative officials visited the village, residents staged a mild demonstration demanding construction of a Sati temple at the site.

However, the District Collector said that such demands were not heard last night when he was at the village. (With PTI inputs)
