Has sought support in rehabilitating children withdrawn from work due to this ban

NEW DELHI: The Union Labour Ministry has sought support from the State Governments in enforcing the ban on employment of children as domestic servants and as labourers in eateries.

In a letter to the Chief Ministers, the Ministry has sought their support in rehabilitating children withdrawn from work due to this ban that comes into effect from October 10.

Union Labour and Environment Secretary K.M. Sahni has also written to his counterparts in Central Government Ministries requesting them for infrastructural support towards rehabilitation of the children released from work and their families as an immediate objective. He has also urged them to make specific provisions in the schemes for working children and their families as a long- term measure. The Secretaries who have been approached include those from the Ministries of Women and Child Development, Human Resource Development, Rural Development, Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, and Social Justice and Empowerment.

A meeting of these Secretaries was hosted by Mr. Sahni recently for developing convergence among various central Ministries in providing benefits to these children and their families. The views and cooperation of industrial associations and NGOs were also sought in providing necessary support towards rehabilitation as a consequence of the ban.
