National Centre for Advocacy Studies, Pune invites you for the formal release and screening of the film "SEZ -Arajakachi Nandi" at 17.00 Hrs, October 7, 2006 (Patrakar Bhavan, Ganjve Chowk, Pune). The film would be released by social activist Ms. Medha Patkar.
The Indian Government in 2005 passed the preposterous Special Economic Zone Act to facilitate the growth of industries in various sectors by providing them several incentives like tax rebates, free infrastructure, relaxation of labour and environmental regulations. Over the past year the Ministry of Commerce has approved more than 200 SEZs. These projects are coming up in a big way in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, UP, Haryana and the Central Eastern Belt of the Country.
Of the 267 projects, 50 are proposed to be in Mahrashtra alone. These would be spread over thousands of hectares in Raigarh, Nanded, Amravati, Aurangabad, Pune, Solapur, Yavatmal, Latur, Nashik, Thane, Nagpur and Jalna districts. Local communities whose lands are being acquired for SEZ projects have been voicing their protests.
In order to support the groups working on the issue and to highlight the SEZ struggle in Maharashtra, National Centre for Advocacy Studies (NCAS) has supported the production of a documentary in Marathi "SEZ -Arajakachi Nandi" made by film-maker Atul Pethe.
The other dignitaries who would be present for the release are highly acclaimed playwright, Mr. Vijay Tendulkar, Comrade Govind Pansare and Justice P. B. Sawant.
