*Street play against death penalty * Special Correspondent http://www.hindu.com/2006/11/30/stories/2006113017530300.htm KOCHI: A street play `Kazhukarachottil Ninnu' (From under the gallows) will be staged at the High Court Junction on Thursday to highlight the need to end the death penalty. Presented by `Njaattuvela,' which aims to be a `permanent street theatre', the play is being staged in the backdrop of the controversies over the death penalty awarded to Afzal Guru for his alleged role in the attack on Parliament House. At a meeting preceding the staging of the play, social activists will debate the effectiveness of the death penalty in combating crime. `Njaattuvela' secretary N.P. Soman alleged that Afzal Guru was sentenced to death in haste and without providing him any rights under the law. He also alleged that under the garb of fight against terrorism, India was handing out death penalties to the minorities, Dalits and agricultural agitators. Meanwhile, a group of social and cultural activists petitioned the President of India to spare Afzal Guru of the gallows and to let him go free by invoking Article 72 of the Constitution.
