* Even as the State witnesses a war of words over alleged custodial deaths, the suicide of 42-year-old Sathyavan at Vellikulangara has added one more to the growing list. Sathyavan, son of Kundukuzhipadam Mundakkal Unnili, consumed poison at his residence after three hours of negotiations with Forest and police officers, who had surrounded his residence. The Forest officers, who had come from Kodanad, had surrounded Sathyavan's residence at 2:30 am on Tuesday. According to residents the Forest officers team had allegedly disconnected the power supply to Satyavan's house, who refused to surrender. The officers had asked him to surrender at that very moment even though he had wanted to do so in the morning. But the officers reportedly insisted on taking Sathyavan immediately and tried to storm into the house. His son got out of the house and informed his uncle and local residents, who had gathered around the house, about his father having consumed poison. The Forest officers informed the Vellikulangara police, who arrived on the spot immediately. Finally, at about 5:00 am, Sathyavan came out of the house and showed signs of restlessness. His relatives said that the police did not believe him when he said that he had consumed poison. It was after Sathyavan's wife informed the police that he had consumed poison and that the lawenforcers were ready to take him to the Government hospital in Chalakkudi. Sathyavan died while being taken to the hospital.
