Mymensingh Rally Denounces Tipaimukh Dam Project Discourses

The historic town of Mymensing ,120 kilometres from the capital city of
Dhaka, standing beside Old Brahmaputra river, witnessed a protest rally
today held at the heart of the city, the venue being the reputed educational
institution, Mukul Niketan. The protest has been aimed at the Tipaimukh Dam
project being implemented  in the Manipur state of India, not far from
north-eastern Bangladesh.

The rally was participated by the leading citizens including the senior Bar
personality Advocate Khalekuzzaman, senior educationist Professor Riazul
Islam, women leader Ferous Helen,Munira Khatun, Lila Roy, Advocate
Selim,Educationist Shafikul Haider Mukul and  a host of people from
different profession including hundreds of students. The rally was presided
over by the Principal of Mukul Niketan Professor Amin Ahmed Chowdhury Ratan.
The program moderated by Angikar Mymensingh chief Pradip Chakraborty and
member Secretary  Advocate Khurram.

The speakers expresses their sheer indignation at the cruel  and indecent
approaches of the relevant authorities in India for  going ahead with the
Tipaimukh Dam project without the consent of the millions inhabiting in the
basin area of the Barak/Meghna.


The speakers termed the Tipaimukh Dam project being anti-people, anti
development, anti-civilisation  and anti-nature. The speakers questioned and
criticised the very basic development paradigm working behind as the logic.
They opined that all the projects across the globe must have to be
nature-friendly. They feared that the Tipaimukh Mega Dam once commissioned
will spell catastrophic disaster and in cases of earthquakes, the
dam-storage water will act as sources of sunamilike disasters in at least 12
districts of the lower riparian Bangladesh. The rally was followed by
symbolic postcard mailing program  to the Indian Prime Minister.
