Congress, SUCI call bandh in Nandigram
24 Hours,13 minutes Ago

Kolkata, India: The Congress party and the Socialist Unity Centre of India has called for a 12-hour shutdown on Thursday in Nandigram in West Bengal.

More plans to acquire land have again led to protests in the state and this time at Nandigram near Haldia.

The bandh was called after villagers clashed with police over land acquisition of 20,000 acres for two Special Economic Zones to be built by Indonesia's Salim group.

"We have voted for the Left Front for 22 years. Now why are they making us cry? Where will we go? We want rehabilitation," said Asadur Rehman, villager.

Roads damaged

The police are now unable to reach the interiors of the village as roads and bridges have been damaged by the protesting villagers.

"We won't give up our land, we are poor people where will we go with our little children. We will give our blood not the land," said Asia Bibi, villager.

"For thirty years the left front government has taught us to fight landlords now it's vice versa and whatever land we have we are now being told to give up," she added.

Reports also say Trinamool Congress activists ransack West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation office.

The West Bengal Home Secretary says the protests were orchestrated by political parties.

The Trinamool Congress which had protested acquisition for the TATA motors project in Singur are expected to join the bandh as well.
