Domestic violence: Special courts soon *Pioneer News Service | Thiruvananthapuram* Separate courts will be set up in Kerala to handle cases of harassment of women, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said.
Lack of a well-defined system to deal with such cases was currently making many such cases meaningless, the Minister said. Kodiyeri hoped that separate courts to deal with cases on woman harassment would help avoid the delay in taking such cases to conclusion. Speaking after inaugurating a workshop on the law to save woman from domestic violence here on Tuesday, the Home Minister said that proper awareness should be created among men about laws on domestic violence. "If this is not done men will have to be put behind the bars," he said. The police had a huge responsibility as far as the implementation of the law on domestic violence was concerned. Kodiyeri said. He said that instruction would be given to make changes to the training programme for police personnel incorporating the law in the police curriculum. "Bringing in the concept of community policing will be effective for the implementation of the law. I had seen the effective implementation of this at a Hyderabad police station during my visit to Andhra Pradesh," Kodiyeri said. The Minister said that community policing would be implemented in all corporations and municipalities of the State. Health and Family Welfare Minister PK Sreemathi, who presided over the function, called for the active role of local self-governing institutions for the effective implementation of the law on domestic violence. She said alert panels at ward level and monitoring panels at State and district levels would be constituted for the purpose.
