~~ Former judge new women's panel chief

Retired judge of Kerala High Court, D Sreedevi, was on Thursday appointed
the chairperson of the Kerala Women's Commission.

  She has earlier served as the Kerala Women's Commission chairperson in
2001.

  CPI leader and former MLA Prof Meenakshi Thampan, CPI(M) leader T Devi and
social activist PK Sainaba were made members of the reconstituted body,
Chief Minister VS Achuthandnan told reporters after a cabinet meeting.

  A person belonging to the Scheduled Caste/Tribe would be nominated to the
Commission later.

  Justice Sreedevi said that a thorough study was necessary to enable the
problems faced by women in the rural areas and hoped that her present
position would help her work for the uplift of those bereft of
opportunities.

  With an experience of over 17 years in the judiciary in various
capacities, Justice Sreedevi became a District and Sessions Judge in1984. In
1992 she became a Judge of the Family Court.

  She was elevated as a Judge in the Kerala High Court in 1997. In 2001,
just before retirement, she was appointed as the Kerala Women's Commission
Chairperson.

  The Achuthanandan Government had dissolved the Kerala Women's Commission
through a controversial extra ordinary gazette notification was issued by
the Government a month ago.

  However Justice D Sreedevi refused to comment on the commission she is
