Dear sir,

National Confederation of Human Rights Organizations (NCHRO) is a newly formed common platform of the various groups and individuals committed to the cause of human rights. The necessity of strengthening human rights defenses and the need for a better coordination of the ongoing efforts in various part of the country  was discussed in various meeting s held recently at  Bangalore and the new confederation is constituted as a humble step towards achieving the same.

The recent spate of encounter killings like that of Shorabuddin Shiekh and Kauser Bi by the State machinery in Gujarat has brought the need to investigate and bring to justice those who are responsible for the elimination of innocent lives.  To discuss the various aspects involved in the fake encounter killings, NCHRO will hold a National Seminar at Mumbai on 26 June 2007, the International Day for the Victims of Torture. It will mark the beginning of a wider campaign to be undertaken by NCHRO.

NCHRO aims to bring to light various encounter killings that have taken place recently which are clear cases of violation of human rights and blatant mockery of the police authority.    The high-ranking inter-state conspiracy involved in Sheik's case is example enough.  The seminar is aimed also to enlighten the general public on the seriousness of the issue and also adopt practical methodologies to encounter this trend.

Human rights activists and legal experts from different states and the relatives of the victims of encounter deaths are expected to participate in the seminar. A get-together of the human rights activists is also planned along with the seminar.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I request you to kindly make it convenient to attend the seminar and the get-together.

The venue and the schedule shall be communicated to you soon.  Meanwhile, you may please advance journey reservations.  For any details, kindly contact me by e-mail or phone.

In solidarity,

K. P. Muhammad Shareef

General Convener
