*PLACHIMADA ANTI COCA-COLA STRUGGLE*
NATIONAL SOLIDARITY CONVENTION
at INDIAN SOCIAL INSTITUTE,LODHI ROAD,NEWDELHI
ON 27th JULY 2007 at 9.30 a.m.
Dear friend,
The historic struggle of the Adivasis and peasants of Plachimada against
Coca-Cola, the mighty imperialist corporate company completed 5 years on
22nd April 2007 when a 100 days all-day relay fast was launched at
Plachimada demanding,
1. Removal of Coca-Cola from Plachimada after compensating the local
people for the destruction of the livelihood resources, and restitution
of the environment.
2. Proper trial and punishment of Coca-Cola for the crimes that threaten
the lives and health of communities, the severe environmental pollution,
hazardous waste disposal, and excess depletion of ground water.
3. Amendment of Panchayat Raj Act, Pollution Control Act, the
Environment (Protection) Act, The Water (Prevention and Control of
Pollution) Act, Hazardous Waste Management and Handling) Rules etc. so
that the Grama Sabhas may be given absolute authority to protect the
livelihood resources like water, soil etc.
The Plachimada Coca-Cola plant stopped production from 9th March 2004.
Its fate depends now on the decision of the Supreme Court and the state
government's actions. Kerala Government banned Coca-Cola in response to
the CSE report on pesticide contents in soft drinks. However, the
government has not shown similar enthusiasm in filing criminal charges
against Coca-Cola despite mounting evidences from the Government
departments such as the Pollution Control Board and Ground Water Authority.
The Plachimada Anti-Coca-Cola Struggle Committee and the Plachimada
Solidarity Committee has decided to constitute a National Solidarity
Committee to Support the Struggle to include-
*all organisations campaigning against the Coca-Cola and Pepsi bottling
plants and franchises across the country.
*all organisations interested to work jointly for democratisation and
decentralisation of water
management.
* all people's movements struggling against pollution of water bodies.
* all who are fighting privatisation of water supply and water resources.
* all who have concern to reformulate basic principles of Panchayat raj,
especially those related to the protection of basic livelihood.
* all who uphold human dignity and social justice.
* and all who are fighting imperialist globalisation, corporatisation,
and transormation of public assets for the private profits of
multinationals.
Please confirm your participation as early as possible so that we can
make the necessary arrangements.
