To: [email protected]Dear Ajay, The case of atrocities against Chithralekha perpetrated by the local CITU autorikhshaw drivers'union of Edat (near Payyanur) which is known at least among many of us throws light on the subject. A Peoples' Action Committee formed with the intention of helping the victim ended up in being dissolved following serious difference of opinion in how to handle the sensitive issue of catse , gender and the cpm politics involved therein. As a direct or indirect conseqence, Chithra was virtually driven out from the place with no sympathy remaining in store for her for many who took part in earlier campaigns. (all the 'activist' players except a few belonged to communities other than dalit!) The issue would have been passed as such but for the determination to continue the fight on the part of the victim ,though with no tangible help in sight. However, the story published by Sreejith Paithalen in Malayalam Wkly dted July 13 and another initiative to take up the case for the dissertation by Carmel Christy and Jenny Rovena (both from Kerala, now being research scholalrs of Hydbad Central University and the CIEFL respectively) has enlivened hopes for new initiatives by concerned individuals/groups. Their topic is somewhat like "Gender and Caste in The Urban Space of Kerala-Where Some Autorikhshaws Burn and Others Run".(cited from memory, and pardon for the possible inaccuracy) --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ greenyouth mailinglist is the activist support mailinglist for kerala To post to this group, send email to [email protected] -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
