*Alcoholism on the rise: Kerala Minister*

Thiruvananthapuram, July 18 (PTI): The increase in drinking habit among the
youth in Kerala is a cause for worry but sharp decline in smoking is a great
relief, according to state Youth Welfare Minister M Vijayakumar.

The state-sponsored outfits like Youth Welfare Board would be roped in to
organise awareness campaigns and workshops against the dangers of alcholism,
Vijayakumar told the state assembly in reply to questions today.

According to official figures, state-owned Beverages Corporation sold liquor
worth slightly over Rs 3000 crore in 2006-07 marking a 20 per cent rise
compared to the previous year.

Recent studies have shown that drinking habit is prevalent among all classes
in society and youth are particularly vulnerable to the menace.
