dear all,

this report is testimony to the recent decline in the journalistic standards
one used to admire in the hindu one grew with. couple of points:

one gets the impression that pre-2004, the journalist in sainath was
circumscribed to appearing in print in their weekend and frontline alone.
what it suppresses is that sai honed his skills at the blitz, karanjia's
later dissolution and unmourned cessation of the publication
notwithstanding, then an exciting place with a team that included the lapsed
leftist -sudheendra kulkarni (of vajpayee's 'kumarakom musings'
fame/notoriety) - surekha bose, frenny maneckshaw, mario rodrigues, et al.
in fact, sai has confided in private that, without belittling the worth of
the numerous accolades that have come his way, what he cherishes above all
is that the back page column - 'the last page', the longest-running
political column in our journalistic history (1941-86), that too in 3
languages -.of the legendary khwaja ahmad abbas was bequeathed him as a
professional legacy by the great man himself, when alive!

similarly, common courtesy demands that due credit be given to the
organisation which helps one in making a book possible - this case 'times of
india' whose support made 'everybody loves a good drought' happen -
pettiness not to mention that.

the report also missed out on the revealing and significant fact that at the
moment of announcement of the award, sai was in yavatmal, embodying in time
his passionate commitment to rural issues - only the mathrubhumi report
mentions this aspect!

regards,
sudhir
