RAJ BHAVAN MARCH

The campaign against CZM program is gearing up in the State of Kerala, On
the Quit India day thousands of people from the coastal villages of
Calicut to Trivandrum gathered in Museum Junction and marched to the Raj
Bhavan. The struggling fishing community actively protested and asserted
with slogans "we will not give away the sea and sea shore, at any cost we
will protect it, and so on.....". If the government goes on with the
implementation of Swaminathan's committee report, the agitation from the
people will be unpredictable. The political leaders who were elected with
the vote from the fishing community are now ignoring this sector. The
women leaders stated that they can not be ignored and the political
machinery have to pay for this.

Mr. Panniyan Raveedran, MP, in his inaugural speech said that if the CZM
is not in favorable to the fishing community, it should be prevented at
any cost. The tourism and industrial lobbies are playing behind this move
to eradicate the fishermen from the sea shore, so that they can avail this
land for there activities. He declared his solidarity for the campaign
against CZM. And he assured that he will strongly raise this issue in the
parliament for the fishing community.

The Kerala Campaign Committee Convenor T Peter, A Andrews, General
Secretary, KSMTF and the leaders P T Muhmad Koya, J P John, P V Wilson,
Anto Elias, S Joseph, K P Safiya, Elizabeth Antony, Freeska Kurishappan,
Magline Peter, M Ambrose, N J Antony has also shared their views on the
CZM.

OUT COME OF THE CAMPAIGN

As a result of the campaigns and a submission given to the Government of
Kerala by the KSMTF (Kerala Independent Fishworkers Federation) to review
the CZM, the State Government has convened a meeting to discuss about the
CZM. The meeting will be convened by the Fisheries Minister at Trivandrum
Government Guest House on 22nd August 2007, 11.00 AM. The participants
will be the minister himself and the top officials of the department and
the leaders of the fishing community. It shows the state Government is
considering the campaign against CZM with its due importance.

In addition to this, the State Government is formulating and launching a
program as part of costal protection i.e. "Green Shore". This is a joint
venture of the Kerala Fisheries Department and Kerala Forest Department.
In each village a peoples committee will be formulated and these
committees will take charge of the planting cashereena trees and
mangroves. In this program and of its inaugural function the KSMTF
representatives were given prominent positions to monitor the program for
its effective implementation.

The Green Shore program has formally inaugurated by Chief Minister of
Kerala on 16th of August. The plantation work has started with immediate
effect.

This all show a positive impact of the campaign going on in Kerala against
CZM. Lets come together to strengthen this movement.
