Subject: Re: Hindu and Muslim Right at Work In Kerala
The two reports that appeared in The Hindu and The Indian Express (Kerala
editions) on 25-08-07 ,one relating to the Hindu Aikyavedi's protest against

giving away an award to M.F.Hussain and the other, concerning a Sunni Jamaat
Ulmas' protest and campaign against school boys and girls being made to sit
on same benches in most of the schools for writing exams indeed do suggest
that bigotry of all hues are unabashedly on the display in the State.
But what is more intriguing, is the kind of disproportionate, and even
salutary coverage these groups do enjoy in the print media. This,
especially when their comic lack of sensitivity to the real issues
invariably faced by people of all faiths in their day to day lives.
Perhaps many of these mechanically minded, professional journalists are
either far behind the common people in both imagination and sense of
propriety, or obviously they are practicing the kind of "embedded
journalism".
Whatever be the reason, most of the popular vernacular newspapers
selectively allow and disallow coverage to the happenings around. Many of
the 'news' originating in a particular district or taluk go hardly beyond
the limits of such district or taluk, thanks to innumerable number of
area-specific editions to each of these papers.
A few of the leading English newspapers though had until recently
comparatively better standard of objectivity and sensitivity to issues of
the polity at large, of late, they seem to be competing with their
vernacular brothern in creating sensationalism.
One has to see that the Hindu Aikyavedi is an organization with a good deal
of negative popularity among most of the devout Hindus owing to its being a
cover organization of the RSS ; similarly, the Jamaat -Ul- Sunni Ulema also
is not among the organizations held in esteem by most Muslims. Any
organization challenging the ideals of the Constitution(equity, justice, etc.
and the gender justice) will most certainly have no place in the hearts of
ordinary devotees in any faith. So they are desperately in need of
projecting themselves as 'big' and coercing people to supporting them with
the aid of these unethically neutral & disproportionate coverage in
newspapers.
