Dear Colleagues in the human rights movement,
I have the sad duty to inform you of the sudden demise of Mr P. V.
Bhaktavatchalam, affectionately called by all of us as PVB, a senior lawyer
practicing in the Madras High Court and a veteran human rights leader of
this country passed away this evening at 4 PM in a private hospital in
Chennai after an illness for a little over a month.
Many of you might also know his daughter Ms. Ajeetha, also a lawyer
practicing in the Madras High Court and a woman activist in Tamilnadu.
A little over 40 days ago he suffered a stroke but was recovering pretty
well. I also had the occasion to meet him some days ago at his house. He
had started talking, writing and also walking within the house a bit in the
past few days and the doctors were very happy with his recovery. It was only
this afternoon that he suddenly took ill with a serious lung infection and
it is after that he suffered a stroke and then a cardiac arrest that brought
this end at 4 PM .
The funeral is to be held tomorrow ( 3rd Sept 2007 ) at 3 PM at the Chennai,
Anna Nagar cremtorium.
Mr. PVB's contributions as a people's lawyer, his fight in the area of human
rights, particularly in the Tirupattur area during the days of Devaram, his
contributions popularizing social economic ands cultural rights as human
rights as early as the 80s in Tamilnadu under the banner of the Organization
for Civil and Democratic Rights ( OCDR) his fight against caste
discrimination and for women's rights and his willingness to also fight the
elections under the banner of the Puthiya Tamizhagam are just some examples
of what this great man had contributed to the history of human rights in the
state and the country.
I paid respects to him just a few minutes back and was told by his daughter
that he had also written his diary in the last few days stating that there
were plenty of tasks that he had yet to complete. This is an indication of
his social consciousness. He had always been an ardent supporter of every
cause that we had taken from People's Watch - both within court and outside
court.
May his soul rest in peace and let us resolve to continue the unfinished
work that this great man had begun and continued steadfastly all these years
in spite of all the challenges that he ad to face.
We take this occasion to pay our deepest condolences to his wife, children,
grandchildren and all the members of his family who were totally engaged
with him in his public life now for many years.
For those of you who would like to have his address :
