People's organizations call for coastal clean-up At a time when the Kerala Government is imposing restrictions on the use of plastic, a new initiative is taking place on the Coastal Clean-up Day. The Theeradesa Mahilavedi, the women's wing of the fiherpeople's union KSMTF(Kerala Swatantra Malsyathozhilaly Federation) along with AICUF Veli unit and WEHELP is organising the cleaning of the coast in Veli Beach at 10.30 am on September 15, 2007. The organisers intend to remove all filth and plastic as a positive action during the Coastal Clean up Day.
While the action is symbolic, the members of the Theeradesa Mahila Vedi feel that the region is already facing deadly chemical pollution from the nearby Titanium factory, causing various cases of cancer, problems of eyesight, skin and other health problems in the region. Even though there is opposition to the nuclear deal, activists reminded that there was little opposition when the nuclear waste was dumped into the sea by the Indian Rare Earths, Ltd, Alwaye. The radiation from the upcoming Koodamkulam Nuclear Power Plant will also pollute the fish and affect the fishing community in Kerala. According to the activists of the fishing community all waste finally end up in the sea and it is the fishing community that has to take the entire burden. The activists said that the community will no longer take such a burden in future and do everything they can to stop this mess. The real Coastal Clean up will take place only if the government, industry and the civil society accept the moral responsibility of this grave situation and do everything they can in support of the lives of the fishing community. The organisers have called for the support of the civil society to strengthen this symbolic act to a wider movement. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Green Youth Movement" group.
