Subject: Boycott Khooni Tata Car - Press Conference tomorrow at 3 pm, Press
Club Delhi
To:

*BOYCOTT KHOONI TATA CAR*

*PRESS CONFERENCE*

*10 January 2008*

*3 pm*

* *

The House of Tatas were voted to be the 3rd most transparent and accountable
corporation in the world by the One World Trust on 20 December 2007. Three
days earlier Shankar Patra (45) of Khaser Bheri hung himself in his cow
shed. This has been the fourth suicide in the project affected villages
where land has been taken over for the Tatas Motor Car project.

The state machinery has consistently furthered the interest of the Tatas by
using brutal state power. Many of the workers and their families are
complaining today of hunger, loss in income and indebtedness. The workers
have so far rejected their promises, asking them instead to guarantee them
work for 11 months a year, the amount of work they used to get on the land
taken over for the Tata Motors Project. Till today the farmers of Singur
(owning about 400 acres) have refused to take cheques and part with their
land.

Ultra low-cost small cars -- such as the much-hyped, about-to-be-launched Rs
1 lakh Tata car -- can mean big trouble, unless India makes drastic policy
changes. The influx of these cars would drive public transport and
two-wheelers off the roads and greatly increase urban congestion and
pollution.

The press conference will be addressed by:

*Medha Patkar (NAPM)*

*Anuradha Talwar (Paschim Banga Khet Mazdoor Union)*

*Sunita Narain (Centre for Science and Environment) *

*Pradeep Saha (Down to Earth).***

*Affected people from Singur*

* *

*Date: Thursday, 10 January 2008*

*Time: 3 – 5 pm*

*Venue: Press Club*
