KOCHI: Eviction for the Vallarpadom Road project has become a
nightmare for the people at Moolampilly.

Ten families which have agreed to part with their land for the
Vallarpadom Road project were evicted from Mollampilly on Monday.

However, the Society of the evicted people of Moolampilly alleged that
they were evicted without proper rehabilitation facilities.

With the authorities planning to evict ten more families on Tuesday
who haven't given consent for land acquisition, there are strong
protests from locals.

There was tension at Moolampilly on Monday morning when the
authorities came for eviction. However, the situation was tactically
handled by the officials with a verbal agreement that rehabilitation
facilities would be given.

"They haven't given us any written agreement on rehabilitation. How
can they evict us without that,'' asks Josy, a carpenter at
Moolampilly.

Suseela, special tahasildar (land acquisition) for ICTT Vallarpadom,
who led the eviction procedures has asked the people to go and occupy
an area of 28 cents of land near Vaduthala Jetty on their own. "It was
shocking.

She told us to occupy the land near Vallarpadom Jetty and set up sheds
there. How can that be done?,'' Josy added. The society pointed out
that eviction without proper rehabilitation was a violation of the
Central Government norms.

Society members Fr Martin Kuttikad, Selestin Master, panchayat member
Joseph Thundipparambil and vice-president Treesa Manuel demanded that
people should not be evicted without completing proper rehabilitation
procedures.

However, the special tahasildar said that she had talks with the
evicted people and that rehabilitation packages had been promised to
the evictees.

"Rehabilitation package has not been given to them, but rehabilitation
has been promised. The ten families which were evicted on Monday were
unauthorised occupants as they have already agreed to evict the place
by their own.

The ten families which are to be evicted on Tuesday had been issued
notice to evict the place. Later warrants were also issued. "On Monday
I have conciliatory talks with them and they have agreed to evict
their own.

The government has not promised any rehabilitation package as such.
The final decision in this regard is in the draft stage. However on
Tuesday the village officials will show the evictees the 40 cents of
revenue land near the Jetty where they can stay.

"Arrangements for that will be taken with the help of the local
tahasildar,'' said special tahasildar Suseela.
