*INSIGHT: YOUNG VOICES*
PUBLIC MEETING
Against 'Harassment of Dalit Students in Premier Educational Institutions'
*Speaker*: Dr. P. Thirumal (Faculty, University of Hyderabad)
*Venue:* Sutluj Hostel Mess, JNU, New Delhi
*Time:* 9.00 pm *Date:* 7 March (Today)
*Dear friends, *
The recent *incidents of Dalit students committing suicide due to
caste-based harassment* by the faculty members in the campuses around the
country are very shocking. On 23rd of Feb, a Dalit PhD scholar from Tamil
Nadu, *Senthil Kumar (Physics Department, University of Hyderabad)* has
committed suicide.
According to his friends and representatives of Dalit students' group he
took this extreme step as he was subjected to continuous harassment by the
faculties. His scholarship was stopped. He was not allotted the guide even
after one year of his registration for PhD. He was given low marks in his
course works. Being son of a landless-labourer family he used to send
substantial amount of his scholarship back home. However, all his merit and
academic brilliance could not provide him immunity from the casteist
prejudices and behaviour and had to pay the maximum price for 'intruding'
into a 'sacred space' that is considered to be 'reserved' only for the
'twice-borns'.
Similarly just a month before (29th Jan) another *Dalit MBBS student,
Jaspreet*, took his life at Government Medical College, Chandigarh. In his
suicide note he clearly mentioned about his harassment by his classmates as
well as faculty members. In IISC Bangalore, *a Dalit PhD scholar from
Andhra, Ajay Shrichandra,* committed suicide on 27th of August 2007.
Till date, the administration of these institutions has vehemently refused
to acknowledge the harassment of Dalit students and had not taken any
actions against those guilty of practicing discriminatory behaviour against
Dalit students.
