Thiruvananthapuram: The former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer has
appealed to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan to intervene in the Chengara
agitation to find a creative solution by adopting a fair and just approach.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, Mr. Krishana Iyer has expressed the fear
that the current build up by trade unions against the agitating farmers,
Dalits and tribals will lead to bloodshed. "It is my humble appeal that
people like you and me who love humanity should not give cause for this."

The jurist has said that news reports about Chengara are disturbing. The
agitation is well past one year and mediations, including the one under the
Chief Minister's initiative, had failed to throw up a solution.

It has come to his notice that there are human rights violations against the
Chengara agitators. The trade unions in Harrisons Malayalam Limited,
according to reports, have initiated steps to cut off all contacts of these
hapless people with the outside world. "The solution to any democratic
struggle by any section of the population should be found through the
appropriate political intervention. But reports suggest that attempts are
being made to line up another section against the agitation and the police
and officials are giving them all protection." The reports that a section of
the estate workers are planning to stage a march to the area is very
disturbing.
