Trade unions' resolve to retrieve encroached estate
Staff Reporter Plantation workers to stage march to Chengara on September 3 COUNTER-AGITATION: A group of plantation workers protesting against the encroachment of Kumbazha Estate of Harrisons Malayalam Limited at Chengara, rendering hundreds of workers jobless over the past one year, on Wednesday. PATHANAMTHITTA: The Joint Trade Union Action Council at Chengara has decided to counter the agitation planned by the Chengara Solidarity Forum "in support of the encroachers at Kumbazha Estate" on August 30. In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the trade union action council said the council meet held at PWD Guest House here on Wednesday has resolved to stage a march and forcibly retrieve the encroached portion of the rubber estate on September 3. The action council would also organise a public meeting in Pathanamthitta town on September 1 afternoon, demanding eviction of all encroachers from Chengara, probe into the flow of funds to Sadhu Jana Vimochana Samyukta Vedi (SJVSV) in the name of the Chengara agitation and action against the Chengara Solidarity Forum leaders who have been abetting lawlessness at Chengara, the statement said. The trade union action council meet has resolved that all plantation workers in the district would strike work on September 3 to take part in the proposed Chengara march with a mission to retrieve the encroached rubber estate from the SJVSV activists and leave it to the plantation workers. The statement alleged that the SJVSV workers have plundered latex worth Rs 1 crore from the encroached portion of the estate during the past one year. The INTUC State secretary A. Shamsuddin presided over the meeting. CITU district president P.J. Ajayakumar, BMS district secretary P.S. Sasi, AITUC district secretary Vilangupara Sukumaran, Plantation Workers Union (CITU) member P.K. Somarajan, Malayalappuzha Mohan (CITU) and INTUC district secretary P.K.
