'Singh is King' makes mockery of Kanjars Dear friends,
Though I do not support any kind of prohibition on any film or creative work as a person devoted to cause of freedom of expression and liberty, that would be the last thing, I would ask for. Yet, recently, I happened to watch film Singh is King, which is absolutely a mindless movie. I am not writing you any review of this film which is not deserving. The sad part of the film is very foul language uttered by actor Om Puri who I hold in high esteem, but this film has proved him a petty minded person. In the film he often use the word : ' Chal Kanjar Kahin ke'..to denounce his friends in the village, which literally mean you are silly Kanjar. We all know that this film Singh is King is basically made in the background of Punjab and in Punjab one of the most marginalised and humiliated Dalit community is Kanjar. Whenever the upper caste Jats have to degrade any one or mock at any one on his dressing sense, or intelligence, they would shout ' Kanjar kahin ke'. This is absoultely a racist langauge. We all know that in India the best way to laugh is to mock at somebody's caste, colour and physical disability. In this film Om Puri has uttered this word at least on five to six ocassion. Many of our friends might have seen this film. Today, I found some one writing in the mail list that this film had denigrated the senior citizen while completely ignoring this huge humiliation to Kanjar community, I felt that it is my duty to inform you that we must seek an apology from the director of the film and also from the censor board of India. How can the censor board approve such films which degrade a community, where the hero laugh at the self respect of the community. Remember, the Kanjars have been one of the most marginalised communities, the Dalit movement has not reached them, they are exploited and laughed at. We must write to the SC-ST commission asking the government to delete this abuse and seek apology from all who are involved in making of the film. It is time, we must ask the film freternity to mind its language and behave civilised way. with regards, Vidya Bhushan Rawat Visit my blog at www.manukhsi.blogspot.com For information on the issues, movements and priorities of Scavenger community in India please log on to www.swachchakar.blogspot.com Contribute your article on freedom, humanism and human rights to www.manuski.com For information on civil society initiatives on Muslims in UP please log on to www.rehnumaa.blogspot.com For Social action, land rights, right to food and hunger issues support Social Development Foundation at www.thesdf.org -- Ranjit --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Green Youth Movement" group.
