Police 'misused' rights panel to arrest me: Ravunni Ravunni M P Prashanth<http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/searchresult.aspx?AliasName=ceW%7CxjRiIDGKYaeu2O3otQ==> First Published : 11 Oct 2008 01:08:00 AM IST Last Updated : 11 Oct 2008 12:58:31 PM IST KOZHIKODE: Porattam general convener M N Ravunni has alleged that the police have misused the name of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) to implicate him in a false case.Ravunni told *this website's newspaper* after his release from the Palakkad Sub-Jail on October 7, that he had lodged a petition with the SHRC, saying two Porattam activists were being kept in illegal custody by the Agali police."The District Crime Records Bureau DySP served a notice on me saying the SHRC had deputed him to take my statement. So, I went there. Later a DySP from Agali took me into custody. The police have discredited the Rights Commission by misusing its name and by arresting the complainant himself," he said. The two Porattam activists were arrested by the Agali police for possessing a CD on training sessions of Maoists in Nepal. The police say the arrested had told them the CD was given by Ravunni."First of all, it is not true that I gave them the CD. Secondly, there is nothing in the CD that attracts charges like treason and waging war against the state. It contains scenes of the first revolt in Rolpa in Nepal and the CD was exhibited at various places in the state," he said.Ravunni pointed out that Nepal Maoist leaders had been accorded an official reception in India after they assumed power. "CPM leaders like Sitaram Yechuri had gone to Nepal to hold discussions with Prachanda and others." Ravunni, a former secretary of the state committee office of the CPM in Tamil Nadu and founder-editor of CPM mouthpiece Theekathir, said human rights violations were rampant whenever the 'socalled' Left parties came to power. A public convention is being held in Palakkad on November 2 under the aegis of the Bharanakoota Bheekaratha Virudha Samithi to protest against Ravunni's arrest. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Green Youth Movement" group.
