I am seeking to organize a panel discussion on dalit-adivasi relations at an 
anthropology conference to be held in Edinburgh in March next year and I was 
wondering if any of you might know any more scholars or research students who I 
might ask to participate. The problem is that we don't have funding to pay for 
someone to come from India (which is very ironic and I am sorry about this) but 
if any of you would know of Europe-based scholars/students I could invite, I'd 
be very gratefull for your suggestions..
I hope you will not consider this spamming--though it's framed as an academic 
discussion it's of course in fact a political/activist one as well and we're 
certainly open to activist participants as well.

Dalit-Adivasi relations: Exploring convergences and contradictions
 
Much anthropological research has focused on the rise of dalit politics in 
India in the past two decades. Likewise, a lot of studies are coming out on the 
adivasi social movements that have arisen in the same period. Relatively little 
explicit thought has been given however to how dalit and adivasi movements-- 
and every-day forms of identity politics-- relate to each other: when and why 
such movements converge and what contradictions are involved. 
 
This panel therefore seeks to explore the reality of dalit-adivasi relations, 
in the present political conjuncture as well as in ‘hidden histories’. We 
invite papers engaging with questions such as: 
 
-How do ordinary people conceive of ‘dalit’ and ‘adivasi’ identity--do 
they  markedly distinguish between these two identities or see them in similar 
terms?
 
-Do the interests of particular communities of adivasis and dalits diverge or 
converge and in what contexts do they do so?
 
-Does the successful political construction of ‘dalit’ or ‘adivasi’ identity 
facilitate or hamper greater dalit-adivasi solidarity?
 
-In what ways do the claims and visions put forward by leaders of adivasi and 
dalit movements come together and how do they diverge? 
 
-Are the categories of ‘adivasi’ and ‘dalit’ blurring or becoming more 
pronounced—and are there alternative political identities emerging that include 
both adivasis and dalits?
 
-What are the effects of institutional policies regarding “Scheduled Tribes” 
and “Scheduled Castes” on the unity or dis-unity of dalit and adivasi political 
imagination?
 
-Are there larger, global processes underlying the rise of dalit and adivasi 
movements in India and how do these processes impact on dalit-adivasi relations?
