 *More Activists Given Harsh Sentences*
* *

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Burma's military junta is rushing to complete the court hearings against
activists who were arrested during and after the protests in August and
September 2007. Yesterday, apart from sentencing 14 leading activists from
the 88 Generation Students Group to 65 years imprisonment, the military
regime sentenced many more pro-democracy activists – students, monks,
campaigners, etc. – to lengthy imprisonments. Family members of those
activists were neither allowed to attend the hearings nor informed by the
authorities before and after their sentences. Defense lawyers were also not
present during the sentencing. Details of the sentences are as follows:

People's Forum on Burma ( Japan) issued a statement today condemning the
sentence of members of the 88 Generation Students Group and urging the
military regime release all political prisoners and to listen to the voices
of people and improve the situation with dialogue. The PFB also strongly
urged the Japanese government to give more pressure to Burma's military
junta to release all political prisoners immediately and unconditionally.
