Three Christians Arrested on False Charges of Conversion in Bangalore

New Delhi, November 14, 2008

Three Christians were arrested in Bangalore on the charges of "inducing"
slum dwellers to convert. Two were later released on bail.

Christian leaders in Karnataka told the All India Christian Council (aicc)
that Mr. Chandrashekhar along with two ladies, Kamlamma and Sandhya, went to
a slum in Jeevanahalli, Bangalore to pray for some of the slum dwellers on
November 12. They were arrested at Fraser Town Police late that evening
after the slum dwellers' employer, named Mr. Gowda, alleged they were
inducing people to covert to Christianity.

The two ladies were released the next day on bail while Mr. Chandrashekhar
is still under police custody because of the Indian Penal Code section under
which he was detained.

Dr. H.T. Sangliana, former Bangalore Commissioner of Police and presently a
Member of Parliament, contacted the concerned police officers and urged them
to conduct a proper investigation.

After the intervention of Dr. H.T. Sangliana and Mr. B.G. Koshy, an
industrialist and Christian activists, the two ladies were released on bail
and leaders are seeking bail for Mr. Chandrashekhar.

Dr. Sam Paul, aicc National Secretary of Public Affairs, said, "This is one
of many examples of Christians who are falsely accused of forcible
conversion by Hindutva forces. They are, of course, innocent. The sad
reality is that, in India today, legal harassment of innocent Christians is
common."

In the wake of anti-Christian violence in Orissa during August, September
and October, the Christian minorities in the state of Karnataka experienced
attacks in 8 (of 29) Districts, causing damage to 32 churches and prayer
halls as well as injuring more than 70 Christians, including 20 nuns beaten
by police.
