Creativity is Godly. This imprisonment by the chain of words is a prison that a writer willingly confines himself to. The thoughts that flow in the form of words from his pen have a strong connection with his soul. These thoughts which when transferred on to the paper connect the writer's soul with that of the general masses. A writer creeps inside slowly and gently and his presence creates a small ripple which turns bigger with time … to eventually become a big wave of change. This change spreads and brings a revolution. This is the influence that a good writer can have on the public. Weeding out the fallacies and perfecting a tattered self is the job of a writer. But from where do these writers evolve? What is it that creates writers? Can writing be learnt? Are some of the questions that young writers usually ask. When such a question was posed on an online forum the answers that I received were diverse. Many people were not pleased to know that a degree in creative writing is offered in so many countries elsewhere. For them, writing is creativity and unless a person is born creative one cannot be a writer. In their view, writing is more of an inborn trait that only a few possess and those who are not blessed with a creative knack can only dream of being one. Only few people had the opinion that writers can be created. According to them, pursuing one's career in creative writing is worth it, provided one has an interest in it. For me, the art of writing like any other art needs training and practice. Just like we have institutes of good repute that teach painting, designing and sculpting, in a similar way writing is also one area that needs training. If budding writers are given guidance and a good platform, they would not only grow but would also develop the creative sense that others think are necessary to pursue creative writing. What is creative sense? It is more of an attitude than a God-gifted ability. Creativity is feeling, an emotion that needs a way out. It is soul-searching of either one's own self or of others. Being original in creation is debatable since whatever one usually creates is a reflection of something or an inspiration. This attitude is a must for any creative person. Some writers discover themselves when there is a personal loss; some get inspiration from nature and some can see what others cannot. In our country, writers are formed on their own. When there is dejection, deprivation and frustration the inner self speaks and thus a writer gets recognition (seldom). It is like a process of self-discovery that has been penned down. The aesthetics become part of your writing naturally since pain is also beautiful in our part of the world. It is ironical that creativity is not well-paid here unless you have done your MFA in Creative Writing from a highly reputable institute somewhere abroad. The reason is that materialism and market competition has overpowered the creative sense of a writer. A creative writer has to fulfill the market's needs in order to sell his/her creative idea, story or script. What are the market needs? It is nothing but to sensationalise everything in order to satisfy the lowest denominator of society and to cater to their tastes and likes and thus gain profit. A writer in a local magazine and an educationist states: "Due to the recent media hype, creativity has taken a backseat. The dramas aired on television are more of 'what the advertisers want' and less of what would soothe the aesthetics of those who need spiritual healing. "Creativity, nowadays, is not igniting an enlightening thought process, which is needed, in society. In Pakistan, there is no proper training institute that could give a degree in the subject of Creative Writing. In fact, Creative Writing is not a recognised field here." Developing the creative eye is needed and this can be formed through proper training and exposure. Writers shape a mindset and thinking of a society. They form an integral part of a nation. Their welfare will not only improve the attitudes of the masses but would also form their voice.
