The suicide of Bala-raju, who was doing his doctoral research on Te-lugu, in his village com-es almost a year after another research scholar, Senthil Kumar, committed suicide, again citing caste discrimination. He was pursuing his PhD in physics and end-ed his life on February 25, 2008. Balaraju committed suicide in his native village of Chinnatundu village of Ranga Reddy district on Saturday. Several student unions have called for a "campus bandh" on Monday demanding action against Prof. B. Rama Brahma, head of department, Telugu. The unions alleged that Prof Brahma "harassed" Balaraju on "caste grounds". The unions also alleged that professors had denied release of his scholarship. "Dalit students are subjected to discrimination by the university authorities and teachers," said Mr Dhanraj, president of the Ambedkar Students Association. "Harassment in the form of awarding lower grades to dalit students has always been a serious issue," Mr Dhanraj said. The victim's family members and villagers said that Balaraju was depressed due to the harassment. They lodged a complaint with the Yacharam police and a case of suspicious death under section 174 of CRPC was registered. The vice-chancellor, Prof. Seyed S. Hasnain, denied the allegations. "I don't agree that Balaraju was harassed on caste grounds nor he was denied scholarship. He joined only in August this year," Prof. Hasnain said. "As far as I know, he was facing health problems and was mentally depressed. That was the reason he was away from the university most of the time. Moreover, the suicide happened outside the campus," he said. Prof Hasnain said he would appoint a fact-finding committee on Monday to ascertain what drove Balaraju to suicide. -- Gyanendra Kumar, Biology Department, Bldg. 463, 50 Bell Avenue, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY 11973 USA Phone: 001-631-344-2787 ------------------------------------------------------- Residence: 16, Harrison Commons, Yaphank, NY 11980 USA ******************************************** Cell Phone: 001-631-873-9373 ******************************************** -- Ranjit --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Green Youth Movement" group.
