In a landmark decision, former Union minister Sukhram has been sentenced to
three-year jail in a disproportionate assets case. The minister has also
been fined Rs two lakh.

Sukhram was arrested in September 1996 for amassing assets worth Rs 4.25

Earlier, the CBI had pleaded on Tuesday before a

to pronounce a maximum punishment of seven years to the former Union
minister for amassing disproportionate assets worth Rs 4.25 crore during his
tenure in the P V Narasimha Rao government.

Advocate S P Minocha, appearing for 82-year-old Sukhram, however, pleaded
for lenient approach towards the minister on the ground of his poor
health<http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/story.aspx?id=NEWEN20090084796#>,
old age and "good" past track record as a politician as well as the
minister.

The judge after hearing both the sides had reserved his order on the quantum
of punishment and said that he will pronounce the quantum of sentence
against Sukhram on Wednesday.

Sukhram was convicted on February 20 under various provisions of the
Prevention of Corruption Act dealing with criminal misconduct by a public
servant.
