NBA CONDEMNS THIS ARROGANT PHYSICAL ASSAULT: ELECTION COMMISSION MUST INTERVENE Dhar: In a shocking incident, the State Women and Child Development Minister Ranjana Baghel literally slapped an adivasi woman on her face, as she was 'irked' by being questioned about her electoral promises. This incident took place yesterday at Palasi village, within the Manavar Police station limits of Dhar District when Ms. Baghel was campaigning on behalf of Mukam Singh Kirade, her husband and BJP candidate from the Dhar Lok Sabha constituency. When Ms Baghel reached the village, there was hardly any news around. She called a group of adivasi Bhilala women saying she would like to talk to them. Just as she began, they questioned the Minister in raised voices about her earlier promises of ensuring adequate electricity and water for the farms, when she had visited them 4 months ago, to which instead of responding orally, the Minister slapped one of the adivasi women, Gangabai Bhilala, causing serious pain and injury in her ear and also bleeding from her nose. The atrocity did not stop with this. According to Gangabai's father-in-law and the other women, the Minister's gunman also physically assaulted Gangabai and violently kicked her! Gangabai went to the Manavar police station along with her husband Mr. Kalu Singh and the other women and demanded that a case of physical assault be registered against the Minister. Apparently the police refused to register a case at this point. It was only later, when Gangai bai was accompanied by Congress MLA Jamuna Devi, did the police register a case. In between, the Thana Inspector of the Manavar Police Station went to Gangabai's house and forced her to sign on some blank papers! SHO of the Manavar Police Station M.S. Dabar has, however, confirmed to the press receiving of the complaint and said that investigation into the matter is on. Meanwhile, Ranjana Baghel has allegedly filed a case of assault against Gangaibai, details of which are yet to be known. Narmada Bachao Andolan views this incident with utmost seriousness and strongly condemns such arrogance and lawlessness on the part of the Minister, which infact is again a manifestation of the increasing valueless criminal politics. As a woman, more so an adivasi women herself, Ms. Baghel is expected to represent her community, but she has instead behaved in a manner totally unbecoming of her stature and ceases any claim to represent the ordinary toiling adivasi women. Please write letters of protest to the National Commission for Women condemning this brutal act and to recommend appropriate legal action against the Minister. Also, do write to the State Election Commission pointing out that this unlawful act is indeed a violation of the spirit of the Model Code of Conduct and necessary action must be taken.
