Rally calls for Lalgarh peace20 Jun 2009, 0256 hrs IST, TNN

KOLKATA: The conscience-keepers of the city its intellectual brigade were
out on the roads again on Friday, this time calling for peace in Lalgarh and
the rest of Bengal. Banners in hand and slogans on lips, they marched from
Gariahat to Rashbehari crossing.

"The government stand is not acceptable. A police attack will lead to
bloodshed and innocent persons will be killed. After the landmine blast last
November, police atrocities have increased. What was the government doing
when Maoists settled down in the villages? The matter should be settled
through talks. We want all sides to stop violence," said Aparna Sen, film
celebrity.

Apart from Sen, theatre personalities Saonli Mitra, Bratya Basu and Kaushik
Sen, poet Joy Goswami and artist Jogen Chowdhury were among those attending
the rally.

"The government should ask the villagers to come for talks. Our march was to
draw the Centre's attention to this mindless violence," Basu said.

The intellectuals also released a statement signed by Mahasweta Devi, Jogen
Chowdhury, Tarun Sanyal, Debabrata Bandyopadhyay and Suvaprasanna. "Members
of the civil society are feeling disturbed by the incidents in Lalgarh and
Jangalmahal. In spite of the rationality and ethics behind the mass uprising
in the area wanton acts of violence committed under grave provocation would
detract the moral foundation of this popular and legitimate movement," the
statement read.

The intellectuals also appealed to the Centre and the state governments "not
to unleash brute force in the name of maintaining law and order or
reconquering lost territory."

"Both the governments should try to find out the cause for dissatisfaction
among tribals and make efforts to solve their problems. The civil society is
willing to create environment for peaceful talks," the statement read.
