Apart from justifiably giving vent to the ire generated by these brahmanic diatribes against a dalit leader, one should be able to go beyond. This is not merely a question of reassessing the worth of Gandhivadi Brahmin Women of all political parties from a dalit womens' perspective. Ms Mayavati has reportedly vowed to repeal SCs and STs (Prevention of Atrocities )Act,1989. (see the report in The Hindu, 17/07/09) if the BSP came to power. But, where did such an idea that the Act amounts to causing insult rather than protects the interests of people belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes occur in the first hand? Had there been any previous discussions in which representatives of these communities expressed the desire to repeal this Act in favour of a 'Sarv Samaj Act'? There are conspicuous lacunae in the reporting of the episodes following Mayavati's remarks and the reaction of Ms Bahuguna. The discussion is being conducted as if the entire controversy were just about the personally derogatory and castiest comment made by Ms Bahuguna against Ms Mayavati. Can Mayavati or someone else be allowed to play down the importance of such legislations and reforms that are crucial for the ongoing struggles of dalits and adivasis for self respect and for protection from the tyrannical social structures of caste? Though Mayavati has every right to personally express her dissatisfaction with the provisions for compensations in cases of rape and murder, the victims might still look forward to the State as their savior in these social brutalizing in the name of caste and against the laws. The BSP supremo seems to be totally ignorant of the entire historical process and pains through which a specific law for protecting dalits and adivasis( which even envisages special courts and procedures) for ensuring effective trials of people who commit such atrocities. Failures on implementation of this Act is a separate topic for discussion. But the self proclaimed savior of dalits and adivasis is now thinking in sarvajan terms! This is but one of the common place trends in identity politics where the 'patrons' tend to forget every aspect of material existence of their 'clients' except some vague concept of honour and pride. Can anybody give the link to the full text of Mayavati's speech at Lucknow , our justified protests against the brahmanic woman in having seriously offended our feelings by using filthy language against the dalit icon, apart?
