Judiciary posed their faith on police to prosecute the organizers of public hearing related to police torture
Today; on 26th of August, 2009 Justice Sanjib Banerjee heard the Writ Petition at Calcutta High Court, Court No. 16 and item no. 831, related with Kirity Roy versus State of West Bengal & others vide WP No. 25022(W) of 2008 in connection with Taltala Police Station case no. 134/2008 dated 9.6.2008, under sections 120B, 170, 229 of Indian Penal Code. The case was initiated by the Kolkata police against Mr. Kirity Roy and others, after successful completion of ‘Peoples Tribunal on Torture’ on 9th – 10th June 2008, where more than 2000 numbers of victims of torture and State atrocities imparted their experiences before panels consisting by different luminaries including ex- Chief Justice, ex Director of National Human Rights Commission, ex Chairperson of National Women Commission, Doctors, Forensic expert, Professor, Psychiatrists, etc. Justice Sanjib Banerjee dismissed the petition on the ground as far reported, that investigation is necessary to find out whether the petitioner wishes to organize a parallel judiciary or not. Mr. Debashis Banerjee of HRLN and Mr. Somnath Roy Chowdhury, advocates, appeared on behalf of the petitioner.
