Dear friends, Last month more than 25 organzations met in Bhopal to address the growing sexual violence on women due to state repression. While some states have been facing this onslaught of sanctioned (with AFSPA) and extra legal violence for decades for others this decade has brought about unprecedented levels of violence which is likely to worsen with the state being ready to daclare war against its own citizens in vast areas of the country, inhabited predominantly by Adivasis , for appropriating natural and mineral wealth. During the past, many initiatives have been undertaken to do fact finding and follow up and many common problems seemed to be facing us. A need was felt to coordinate, consolidate and strengthen our collective work. Bhopalmeeting was an attempt towards this, to initiate a concerted campaign nationally to make women's voices heard. We are attaching the statement which was adopted at the meeting and will be forwarding you the report in a day or so.
