 Dear Friends,

Fima Kuwait had organised an award conferring function on Friday, 25th
December 2009, and honoured TEESTA SETALVAD, AJIT SAHI, R. B. SREEKUMAR IPC,
and SUHEL TIRMIZI (Senior Lawyer at Gujarat High Court). Here is a report
prepared by our group member Rafeek.

*FIMA celebrated 13th Anniversary and honored eminent personalities *

- *Mohammed Rafeek*

Federation of Indian Muslim Associationa Kuwait celebrated its
13thAnniverasy- Mega Event 2009 on 25 December and honored elite
personalities
from the filed of social justice and unbiased journalism. H.E Ambassodor
Ajay Malhothra was the chief guest of the function, inaugurated the event in
which FIMA’s president Mukhtar Marouf had the presidential address.

R.B Sreekumar, Former DGP of Gujarat, Teesta Setalvadh, Co-editor,of
Communalism Combat and Secretary,Citizen for Justice and peace, Ajith Sahi,
Editor at Large, Tehelka Magazine, Suhel Tirmizi, Senior Advocate, Gujarat
high court were chosen for the awards by the FIMA award panel, for their
dedication and untiring contributions to the deprived of the society.

Awardees talked about their deep thoughts and shared their experiences to
the grand audience of the Omar Bin Khattab auditorium, Al-Islah complex of
Al Rawdha.

B.R Sreekumar dedicated his honor to ordinary policemen who stood for
justice and also for Ehsan Jaffrey, former M P from Gujarat who lost his
life in Gujarat riot of 2002. Sreekumar, who was also a Professor in
History, explained the social integrity and communal harmony once prevailed
in India. He talked about the trading community of Arabs and their arrival
to India, especially to Kerala. He further added about the battle Muslims
fought for Hindu Kings of Kerala opposing Portugese invasion to the land.
Soldiers of the King’s army were all Muslims and they fought till death for
their home land. British were the first who divided people of India in the
name of communal grounds. With the support of British established the Indian
Patriotic Association and their seditious nature and Hindu Maha Sbha were
the two organizations formed the root cause for the forming RSS and the
Muslim league of united India existed before Independence.

Communalization of politics and politicization of religion were the prime
reason of demolition of Babri Masjid which was never promoted by any of the
Hindu divine texts. Those who are thinking in communal grounds without
understanding the religious texts are main obstacle for brotherhood among
Muslims and Hindus. So it is necessary to revive our spiritual values and go
back to our fundamental principles of the religions.

The Human right activist Teesta Setalvad appreciated FIMA for selecting her
co- awardees for their unbiased and willful stand they took in the path to
justice. By mentioning her Gujarat experience she pointed out those people
who want to stand for justice, but shut their mouth because of the deep
fright existing in the mind. She remembered her lonely battle and how she
and her colleagues fought for justice. She added that though it was a
lonely battle, but they made new friends and families. We may not win the
ultimate success, but the path shows the hope in battle in which bringing
the victims in front. Truth can be told and justice can ensure only when a
fair and dedicated investigation occurs.

She stressed the implementation of Rajindra Sachar Report for the
empowerment of minorities and the majority community has to play an
important role in this. The enrichment of India was the contribution of
different communities and India will never develop without considering or
preventing the rights of major sect of the citizens.

Caste is another issue in this regard.

She noticed the trend of excluding many of the Muslim freedom fighters from
the history text books in different states of the country and she explained
how Citizen for Justice and Peace involved in different activities to
eliminate hatred from text books and to assure a secular education system.
Her organization has been fighting against violence to education and
journalism along with fighting for victims of violence. It’s shame that
teaching has got least preference of choice among people in a country, where
once existed a good civilization of Guru Shishya tradition and oral History.
Her organization is also concentrating to revive the self esteem of the
teachers and teaching profession.

She also shared her experience of astonishment after hearing and addressing
thousands of Dalits and Adivasis of North India immediately after Best
Bakery case. She felt from them how much they value her battle for justice
as their own battle and role of its success in their own battle. She
appreciated FIMA for its support for Humanity, justice and Human rights.

Ajith Sahi talked about erosion of ethics and values in the field of
journalism. He indicated that almost all English news papers are acting
like “Urban Times”, which are just entertainment materials for those who are
living in metros and other urban areas. By giving more importance to the
short living news, media is excelling to fool the people. He dedicated his
award to his colleague in Tehelka, Ashish Khethan for his adventurous and
heart throbbing journeys to bring out the conspiracies behind massacres in
Gujarat.

He remembered his trips to the so called Naxal dominating Chattisgarh, where
innocent men and women are brutally killed by the policemen. He elaborated
his experiences in the utterly undeveloped and poorest people living areas
of Chattisgarh and how he brought out the real stories. Even though he
doesn’t have much hope that there will be actions on all these, but he feel
that it will at least help to give an account of these “no man’s lands” to
the interested. His landmark work was about his true investigation and
journey he had to find out the situation and background of those imprisoned
in the name of SIMI activists. He said that 99% of those who imprisoned in
the name of SIMI were innocent people. His prime interest was not to know
whether SIMI fundamentalists or not, but to know the truth behind stories
made by Police Intelligence.

Mentioning the demolition of Babri Masjid by Sangh Parivar, he blamed
Narasimha Rao Government for not protecting the historical monument. He
concluded with the remark that the communal divide and violence flamed on
the day of demolition of Babari Masjid is still burning in the minds of
people.

Senior Lawyer of the Gujarat High Court, Suhel Tirmizi, spoke about the
efforts to bring justice to victims. He memorized Judiciary’s attitude and
the question once asked by a judge to him about his and his NGO’s intention
of money making by appearing for the victims. He replied the judge that
vultures make profit out of the dead bodies. He told that many of his
friends left him alone after 2002 when he started appearing for victims.

He dedicated his award to Teesta, who suffered of banishment and lots of
defamation & humiliation. He described principles and inspiration he and his
team has by quoting from Quran in which explains ‘ Killing of a an innocent
man is like killing the entire mankind, and saving an innocent man is like
saving entire man kind’ and further he said the struggles they had is simple
when compared to the suffering had By Prophet Mohammed and His companions.

Awards were delivered by FIMA’s president Mukhtar Marouf, General Secretary
Galib Bin Al- Mashhoor, Dr. Ahmed Al Ghazi and Kareem Irfan. General
Secretary,Galib Bin Al- Mashhoor welcomed the Mega Event and Treasurer
Saleem Desai delivered the vote of Thanks. Free prizes were distributed to
the selected persons of the audience before concluding the meeting.
