4 CPM workers killed in Lalgarh *Express News Service* Posted online: Monday , Jan 04, 2010 at 0516 hrs *Kolkata : *Four persons, all CPM supporters, were killed on Sunday in Lalgarh. Two of the victims were beheaded; they were both sons of a CPM supporter who was killed by Maoists in 2007. The police suspect that the violence was a reaction to security forces gunning down five Maoists on Saturday. "We have recovered four bodies and sent them for post-mortem. On Saturday, we had gunned down five Maoists and there was a call for revenge. Preliminary investigation indicated that Maoists were behind the murders. Two of them were beheaded. We have tightened security arrangements in the area," said Manoj Verma, police superintendent of West Midnapore district. Local residents spotted the headless bodies of Anath Singh (40) and Hiteshwar Singh (35) near Shyamnagar village under Belpahari police station. According to sources, a Maoist squad raided their house in Shyamnagar on Saturday night and dragged them out. They started beating the two and took them away. According to Maoists, they were police informers. "Their bodies were found in Shyamnagar and their heads were found at Nekra-Anchra. The Maoists are trying to create fear among the locals," said a senior police officer from the district. Gopal Singh, Anath and Hiteshwar's father, who was a local CPM leader, was shot dead by Maoists in Chakpahari in 2007. In a separate incident, Jhontu Patra (29), a CPM supporter, was killed in Bamal village under Lalgarh police station. His bullet ridden body was found in the wee hours. According to the police, Maoists had raided Jhontu's home on Saturday night and took him away, before killing him for being a police informer. Another body was recovered from Burishol under Lalgarh police station. The deceased was identified as Shankar, who too was a CPM supporter. The police are all set to strike at the Maoists in a big way and for this DGP Bhupinder Sign went to Lalgarh to make an assessment of the situation. II. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/Over-100-killed--Centre-worried-over-Lalgarh/563039 Over 100 killed, Centre worried over Lalgarh *Press Trust of India* Posted online: Monday , Jan 04, 2010 at 0447 hrs *New Delhi : *Nearly 100 people have been killed by Maoists in Lalgarh-Jhargram area in the last three months of 2009, raising serious concerns in the Home Ministry. The Ministry officials said the West Bengal government seems to have failed to tackle the extremists despite having sufficient paramilitary forces. Officials said incidents of murder of political workers, ironically most of them belonging to ruling Left Front, and innocent villagers by terming them as “police informers” and policemen, have become common in the 150-km area in West Midnapore district. “The situation in Lalgarh-Jhargram area is very disturbing. The Maoists have been killing people at will and it seems there is no one to check them,” a senior official said. Burning houses, setting fire on vehicles, rampant extortion, destroying office buildings, bridges and other infrastructure have been going on freely. Despite having around 2,500 Central paramilitary personnel and adequate number of local police force, the state government has failed to tackle the Naxals. “I am disappointed over the Lalgarh situation...The situation is pretty depressing...despite adequate number (of) Central paramilitary forces (being) sent to them in June 2009, the West Bengal government has not been able to contain the problem,” Chidambaram said. The Home Ministry seems frustrated due to Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government to nab CPI (Maoist) leader Kishanji. The Maoists have recently published a document claiming that they killed 270 securitymen and lost 232 men between July 2008 and September 2009. -- Peace Is Doable -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Green Youth Movement" group.
