The YCL cadres later handed them over to the police. All 26 of them spent the night at the Ward Police Office, Narayangadh. An employee of UNICEF, a daughter of CPN-UML's district leader including two Army personnel and even a policeman were among those who were held by YCL cadres. They later accused YCL of "character assassination" and complained that the entire episode put them in severe mental torture. However, YCL's district in-charge said they raided the hotels as part of their campaign to put a lid on what it said increasing "immoral" activities in the society. "We took the action upon receiving the complaint that they were involved in illicit activities," YCL district chairman Abhisekh told Kantipur. He didn't describe what kind of "illicit activities" the couples were involved in. The YCL cadres had raided various hotels in Narayangadh between 10 -2 pm in the night. Those couples who the YCL held had booked their rooms for the night. Hotel owners complained that couples who had come to stay in their hotel were apprehended by the YCL cadres without any fault of theirs, adding that such acts of the Maoist youth wing violates personal freedom and puts a question on one's security. "This act of theirs has also badly affected our business," Dinesh Chuke, owner of Gangotri Hotel told the daily. To "expose" the 13 couples who had spent their entire night in police custody, YCL cadres had even called media-persons on Saturday morning. On the instruction of the Chief District Officer, police later released the couples. While the girls and women were handed over to their parents, the men were released in the presence of journalists. CDO Maheshwor Neupane told the daily that nobody can take the law into their hands and added that the YCL act of raiding the hotels and apprehending the couples was "condemnable". District Police chief Nawaraj Dhakal said that only the police has the authority to carry out raids and take individuals into custody. He said that if anyone is suspected of "illicit" activities they should first inform the police.* * 2010/1/10 Venugopalan K M <[email protected]> > Lot of reported and unreported incidents like this do occur, but the > party leadership unfailingly find reason to justify such acts of > vandalism. > (Please check today's Deshabhimani, preferably Kannur edition to see > how the party answers; sorry, I haven't seen it yet) > When even bigwigs of the literary world, like Sacaria are not spared > of such attacks, the small scale human rights fighters of Payyanur can > definitely be proud of bearing the brunt of such attacks on many > occasions in the past.
