Radical Women and Sisters Organize for Survival applaud guilty verdict in Dr. Tiller murder case

Sentencing is set to begin March 9, 2010, and the prosecution will be seeking to ensure that Roeder will serve at least 50 years of a possible life sentence for his shooting of abortionist Dr. George Tiller. This judgment is a vindication for women's rights and reproductive health groups, as well as for the family and friends of the late Dr. Tiller, who was gunned down in his church in Wichita, Kansas, on the morning of May 31, 2009. It is also a blow to the rightwing anti-choice groups who use terroristic tactics of intimidation and destruction, up to and including assassination of doctors and other health workers, in an attempt to combat a woman's right to choose her own destiny. In the words of a fellow doctor speaking out after Dr. Tiller's murder, “The idea that an embryo or fetus is equal to or more important than the life of a cantankerous adult doctor is no longer a sick private delusion. It is a collective psychosis masquerading as religion that has become a political force threatening democratic society.” The forces that targeted Dr. Tiller for decades because of his work for reproductive justice may have ended his life, but they will not end his work or silence the message of his courage and convictions. In the tradition of Dr. Tiller's defense of reproductive rights, Sisters Organize for Survival held a rally on the Capitol steps in Olympia on January 22, the 37th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, in an ongoing campaign to further protect reproductive justice and other essential rights. -- You cannot build anything on the foundations of caste.
