HYDERABAD: For Moodu Gopichand, life has closed as many doors as it has
opened. Despite hailing from a poor tribal family in Khammam, he has been
very bright in his studies, and secured admission into Gandhi Medical
College.

His mother has been the only source of support -- monetary or otherwise --
for this boy from Usirikayalapalli village of the district, as he lost his
father at a tender age. She provided for his mess bill, books and
examination fee by running a small-time grocery store in the village, and
working as an agricultural labourer.

While Gopichand is still in his second year of the medical course, his
mother Bhimini has been diagnosed with kidney failure. She lost both her
kidneys, and needs regular dialysis for survival.

“We have been advised against transplantation, because drugs would cost a
hell after that. Surviving on dialysis is the only option left. We are
helpless and don't have even a sliver of land to sell for the expenses,”
laments Gopichand. After getting treatment for a brief while at the Nizam's
Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhimini has been admitted to the Nephrology
ward of the Gandhi Hospital and waiting for the first dialysis. She needs
three doses of Erythropoietin injections of 4000 IU strength per week, which
would cost about Rs.1,600 each in the open market. “Unless she undergoes a
minor surgery for fixing of the arteriovenous fistula, doctors say, she will
not be covered under Arogyasri. Even after that, she will need dialysis
twice a week, and we may have to depend on paid treatment too. I, being a
student as of now, will not be able to garner that much money,” Gopichand
says. He will also need monetary support to continue with his course and
finish it. Incidentally, he secured 11 {+t} {+h} rank among STs in medical
entrance test. He also scored 93.5 per cent in Intermediate.

Philanthropists may contribute to Gopichand's account (No: 62072856750) with
