* Prof. Amrik Singh is dead* Noted scholar and former Vice President of the National PUCL passed away at New Delhi last night. He was 89.
One of the most distinguished educationists in India, Prof Amrik Singh became the Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala after a 25-year career as a teacher. He also wrote extensively on higher education and published about a dozen books. Though he officially retired in 1982, Amrik Singh wrote extensively and served on many academic committees. He was also the Officiating President of the National Institute of Panjab Studies, Bhai Vir Singh Sahitya Sadan, New Delhi. Amrik Singh did his Masters from Government college Lahore in 1944 and became an English teacher. After Partition, he taught for some time in Shimla, and then joined Khalsa College in Delhi in 1951. In 1957, he went to University College, London, for PhD in English. He joined Punjabi University, Patiala, as Professor of English in 1963, after which he was appointed Secretary of the Association of Indian Universities. Amrik Singh was Visiting Professor for Educational Policy at the University of Wisconsin, USA, in 1969-70. He was Director, South Delhi Campus, University of Delhi, from 1973 to 1975 and is regarded the founder of the South Campus. He became Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala, in 1977. His book “Asking for Trouble: What it Means to be a Vice-Chancellor Today” aptly sums up his experience. Prof. Singh was one of the most dedicated office bearers of the PUCL. The organisation always benefited from his erudite counsel and guidance. It is a great loss to the organisation. PUCL deeply condoles the death of one its most illustrious members. -- MD.
