21 April 2010 14:05The much anticipated meeting of the High Level Political
Mechanism (HLPM) on Wednesday failed to arrive at any decision to resolve
the protracted political impasse, but leaders claimed they would reach a
broad understanding at the next meeting of the mechanism slated for Saturday
(April 24).
Vice chairman of Unified CPN (Maoist) Narayan Kaji Shrestha informed that
the HLPM meeting dwelled on the previously set six-point agenda, which
includes formation of national unity government, dismantling of the
paramilitary structure of Maoist-aligned Young Communist League (YCL),
return of the properties seized during the insurgency and formation of a
state restructuring commission.

He said the leaders of the three parties presented their views on these
agendas and agreed to find a package solution.

Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, vice chairmen Dr Baburam Bhattarai and
Shrestha, Nepali Congress leaders Sushil, Koirala, Sher Bahadur Deuba and
Ram Chandra Poudel, UML chairman Jhala Nath Khanal and other central leaders
of the three parties were present at the meeting held at Maoist
parliamentary party office in Singha Durbar.

At the meeting, the Maoist side reiterated that the constitution-drafting
and the peace process cannot be expedited unless there is a Maoist-led
unity government.

Earlier today, the Unified CPN (Maoist) had decided to formally table a
proposal for dissolution of the current government in order to ensure timely
constitution drafting at the meeting.

A meeting of the party's powerful standing committee held at its
headquarters in Koteshwor decided to table a formal proposal for dissolution
of the current government after concluding that there is no meaning in
extending the tenure of the Constituent Assembly while the current
government is in power.

Emerging from the meeting, party spokesperson Dina Nath Sharma said that the
new constitution can be promulgated by the May 28 deadline if there is
consensus among the parties.
