in the old SSLC book, there is a front page with details such as caste, address etc. , but not along with the marks
i have noticed that earlier UGC (NET) certificate of SC/ST candidates were printed in a different colour (racist?) and a special mention to verify caste certificates caste certificate comes into play only when one is claiming reservation or applying for the reserved post. The very act (printing in a differnt colour and mention of caste certificate) suggests that the sc/st candidate's identity should be made available to those who scrutinise applications and conduct interviews. In the context of higher education and employment where exists gross caste discrimination, this amounts to limiting the scope of a sc/st candidate within quota only, literally denying him/her to compete in teh general category. The assorted 'meritocracy' is constructed on such obvious exclusions.. and therefore, i think anivar raises an important question, though there are differnt markers our meritocratic ruling public has identified to filter "merit" for eg; in the altar of meritocracy and the dream of many malayalis- AIIMS, a Dalit doctor who got admission in the merit list has to cancel his admission once his caste identity was revealed bz of the hostility shown by his peers/teachers.. and we are living in a country where we have professors like Prof Malik of JNU who has no shame in connecting caste with genetics and argue tht some are born "inferior" such racist/casteist scientists lose their job in the west... here they are the "preserves of the golden past".
