Dear Com Subhashini Ali,
If u were in Kerala for a few days nowadays, perhaps you would not have
commented on the communal issue. The church has been communal, the communal
parties have been communal; but now the CPIM that is supposed to fight
communalism of all sorts and bring some sanity to the society, is openly
playing communalism. Perhaps that goes well with the shocking
corporatisation of the party, especially in Kerala. Com Pinarayi Vijayan's
speech at Quilon at a closed meeting of party functionaries wherein the poor
organisers had forgotten to switch off the microphone was revealing, indeed
shocking. He could only see the kerala society in terms of the caste and
religious configuration, and was advising the party functionaries what
position should the party take vis a vis various communal organisations. He
set the tone of playing the majority card by his pleasing remarks on the
NSS, and the unpleasant remarks on Muslim organisations including those that
were fellow travellers of the Left movement.
This was then promptly followed up by concerted anti-minority rhetoric. Com
VS Achuthanandan has always been not a closet communalist but an open
communalist, even when some Muslim boys and girls bagged ranks in
competitive exams when he was oppostion leader, instead of complimenting
these kids from a backward community, he had brazenly alleged that  those
scores were due to manipulation! And now he is leading the party in the
campaign against Muslims, and there is apparently cease fire in the party at
least on this count. This communal positioning of the party, to attract
Hindu votes puts even Modi to shame. I am sure that this will be an issue
that the party will have to add to the long list of issues of regret and
correction in future. Interestingly this is the first time a major political
attempt is made to polarise the kerala society, after the nototious
'liberation' struggle of the christian and upper caste forces, that had
prompted the centre to dismiss world's first democratically elected
communist govt.
Incidenly, caste and religion are as much a reality in CPIM as in any other
party. And CPIM is the only party that did not see an increase in the number
of OBCs in elected positions after the Mandal process.
Long live the struggle for communism, down with communalism
