Warm regards Latha *Date:17/06/2010* *URL: http://www.thehindu.com/2010/06/17/stories/2010061762220700.htm* ------------------------------ Back National <http://www.thehindu.com/2010/06/17/02hdline.htm> * No nod for Athirappilly: Ramesh * K.S. Sudhi KOCHI: The Athirappilly hydro electrical project will be a recipe for environmental disaster, Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh has said. “The Athirappilly forest area is another Silent Valley that needs to be protected,” Mr. Ramesh told The Hindu over phone, reacting to the news reports that the Centre will soon give clearance for the project. “No Union Minister, as quoted in some reports, has spoken to me in regard to the Athirappilly project. It is 100 per cent false. I have not stated that the project will be cleared soon and I have made my stand very clear on the Athirappilly issue.” Farooq's stance Sujay Mehdudia writes from New Delhi: Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday said he had taken up with Mr. Ramesh the issue of environmental clearance for the Athirappilly project and the matter would be sorted out soon. “We will clear it very soon as I have discussed the issue with Mr. Ramesh,'' he told reporters on the sidelines of a function here. Dr. Abdullah said he had got a “very good reaction” from Mr. Ramesh about the project and “we are going to fast forward the initiative.'' Kerala's ruling Left Democratic Front government had alleged that Mr. Ramesh had undermined the proposed power project at Athirappilly. * * © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu -- 0091 9746339846 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Green Youth Movement" group.
