Hi

In today’s Hindu I read Mullappally’s press statement that Maudani’s
allegations were baseless. He also added ‘If maudani is truly
innocent, he has nothing to fear’. Reading both these statements
together I doubted the minister’s conviction. I exclaimed to my
roommate that if the minister’s first statement comes from conviction
he doesn’t have to add the second one. The second one nullifies the
first claim that Maudani’s allegations are baseless. My friend was
angry. He said he hates Maudani. I asked him why. I asked him if he
knows Maudani. I asked him if he read Maudani. I asked him if he has
seen his interviews. The answer was NO. Then why on the earth you hate
him, I asked. He said he is a bad man and that’s it. He knew it,
though he didn’t know from where.

I have also been reading Kamala Surayya’s writing called ‘the uses of
gun in literature’ in ‘Unmadam’ a Malayalam anthology. In that she
says (Reproduced from Soorya TV) that she believes in terrorism. She
says all the corrupt politicians should be shot. She also adds that
she keeps a gun. Now if that book is found in a terrorist’s room would
they charge her? Or ban the book? I also thought of Thogadias and
Modis and Shree ram senas. I also thought of the media not addressing
the Malgaon blast suspects as terrorists. The adjectives used for them
were very respectful. May be Kamala Surayya recognized this in her
literary provocation that a terrorist can only be a Muslim.

Why my roommate hates Maudani with whom he had no context at all, when
he doesn’t hate ‘Satyananda Saraswati’ or any other Hindu extremists?
Why is it that people are scared to talk for Maudani? Isn’t it because
he is Muslim and he is upfront about his Islamist politics? The left
front has disowned Maudani after elections. Obviously he is the bad
Muslim to be disciplined, but now who will own him?

I remember, that much quoted poem (and I remember this often)
when they came for communists....
