*More power to women in Mayaraaj**
*
Since the day Mayawati took charge of Uttar Pradesh as CM, she has been
ensuring that women get their due place in the state bureaucracy. As a
result, for the first time, out of the 70 districts in UP, 10 have women as
the District Magistrates.

WHEN IT COMES to sticking to promises, UP Chief Minister Mayawati has little
competition. And so in less than one month since she took over as the top
boss of the most populous state of the country, she has ensured that the
women in the state bureaucracy not only get their due but are well-settled
with plum postings.

No wonder, out of the 70 districts in UP, a staggering 10, highest ever in
the state’s topsy-turvy bureaucratic history, have women as the District
Magistrates. And the list is undergoing continuous revamp every now and
then. As of now districts like Varanasi, Unnao, Auraiyya, Mainpuri,
Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Hathras have women bosses at the helm.

Leena Johri and Ritu Maheshwari are the District Magistrates of Barabanki
and Ghazipur respectively. Pinky Jowel is posted at Hathras while Anita
Meshram is in-charge of former Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav’s bastion
of Mainpuri. Though officials in the chief minister secretariat while rule
out "any such prioritization on the grounds of gender", they are quick to
admit that with a lady as the top boss of the state “it was but obvious that
the women folk would get their due."

A senior official talking to the writer while confirming the "special
attentions to the women officials" however attributed it to these officials
being "very good and competent." He further elaborated that it was just
that, in the present regime they have been identified, hand-picked and have
been given field postings.

Whatever the justifications be, one thing is loud and clear: in Mayaraj the
power would flow through the femme fatales!

" The so called caste-hindus are bitterly opposed to the depressed class
using a public tank not because they really believe that the water will be
thereby spoiled or will evaporate but because they are afraid of losing
their superiority of caste and of equality being established between the
former and the latter. We are resorting to this satyagraha not becasue we
believe that the water of this particular tank has any exceptional
qualities, but to establish our natural rights as citizens and human
beings."

- Dr B.R. Ambedkar, Mahad Satyagraha Conference, December 25th , 1927
