Thiruvananthapuram on the Friday, the 30th of June, at 5 pm. Sri.

the films. The screening is organised by Friends of Sarat. The
following films will be screened.

1. Vikas Bandook Ki Naal Se
(Development Flows from the Barrel of the Gun)

Directed by Meghnath and Biju Toppo

This is a film on the human right violations on the indigenous people
in India. In the name of development, the resource rich adivasi
homelands are encroached upon by the corporates, causing  only
displacement and suffering for the adivasis. Any resistance against
this unjust intrusion is suppressed by with the help of state power,
supported by state propaganda in the name of a distorted notion of
development, from which the people at large never benefit.
The film documents the state violence on the people affected by so
called development projects in five states of the country.
Development Flows from the Barrel of the Gun had won an international
award, a silver conch at Mumbai International Film Festival 2006.
2. Gadi Lohardaga Mail
Directed by Meghnath and Biju Toppo
Ranchi was brought on the Indian railway map with the opening of the
Purulia-Ranchi narrow-gauge line in November 1907. This line was
extended up to Lohardaga in 1911. A narrow gauge train ran on the
track till January 2004, when it was withdrawn.
The film is an interesting documentation of many people’s memories of
the narrow-gauge train, shot before it was stopped. Through Nagpuri
folk songs, the personalities on the train brings forth the angst of
the one leaving their beloved, their homes, their families and their
roots, perhaps for ever. These were songs that were sung in those days
when the train became popular, especially among the tribal people
emigrating for work in the tea estates of Assam. A journey that became
a part of the region’s history.
