*Dear friends, *While it is true that we have to be watchful and alert about the government level high powered committees being constituted and how they function and who mans them and take pro active steps, we should also be clear about whether we are cross checking the news that we receive. The discussion presently going on is on two different committees. The committee led by Rajaji is the Niyamasabha Paristhithi COmmittee and its mandate is to take into consideration issues where there are environmental problems, make site visits, hold public consultations with affected people and then present their reports in the legislature. The Rajaji committee has not be removed or re constituted. In the same web page of the *http://www.niyamasabha.org/codes/comm.htm* please look into the committees under Kerala Legislature Committees. The committee on environment is still headed by Rajaji Mathew Thomas MLA. The Constitution since 2009 is given. This is based on verification. The committee led by Minister Binoy Viswom is Niyamasabha subject committee on Forest, Tourism and Environment and its mandate is different from that of the Rajaji Committee. Look at the handbook see Page 7 of the Constitution and functions of the subject committee section 235 which clearly says the functions of the subject committee which are entirely different from that if the Legislature committee. The functions of the subject committee are to scrutinize demands for grants, examine legislations, to advice government on question of policy, legislation on which the government may consult a committee etc. etc... Please see below for the constitution of the two committees below. We should be careful while responding to such news . It will affect the credibility of the activist groups and NGO support groups ultimately. * KERALA LEGISLATURE COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT* *Date of Constitution : 13th January 2009* *Shri.
